Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian has been a Canadian and American feminist media critic for more than 20 years. She's well-known as a public speaker. She is the founder of Feminist Frequency a website that provides commentary and videos on portrayals of women in popular media. Anita Sarkeesian was a Canadian and an American feminist media critique. Feminist Frequency - a not-for profit website that focuses on gender representation in popular culture narratives - is created and directed by Sarkeesian. She is committed to deconstructing stereotypes about women and how they appear in popular media. Furthermore she aims to create the awareness of harassment on social media targeted towards women as well as those who are marginalized. With a master's in political and social thought from York University Sarkeesian is also an extremely sought-after public presenter and has presented speeches at TEDxWomen XOXO Festival as well as the United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. At a young age, Sarkeesian was fascinated with gender issues and feminist thinking. When she was still in school, in 2009, she created her Feminist Frequency website. She had a plan to start an internet-based program that would examine the role of gender in games however, she was also the subject of an online campaign to harass her. The attack wasn't enough to halt her. Instead, it strengthened her commitment as a feminist and media critic. The award-winning journalist has received numerous accolades to recognize her significant contributions to the world of feminism.
