Tom Hanks-5-1024x767Hanks was reunited with Ron Howard in his next part, playing the commander and astronaut Jim Lovell in Apollo 13 (1995). Critics generally applauded the film as well as the performances of the entire cast which included actors Kevin Bacon, Bill Paxton, Gary Sinise, Ed Harris, and Kathleen Quinlan. The film received nominations for the Academy Awards nine times and it took home two. Later in the year, Hanks starred in Disney/Pixar's computer-animated film Toy Story (1995), as the voice of Sheriff Woody. One year later, Hanks made his directorial debut with the musical comedy That Thing You Do! (1996) which follows the rise and fall of a pop group from the 1960s as well as the role of a producer. The Time magazine's Richard Schickel called it "charming" and many experts agree that Hanks performances earned him a spot in the top romantic comedy stars of his generation.
